Isle of Lewis | Eastern Townships of Quebec | Ripley | Canada West | USA
Since 1994, my passion for genealogy has been a driving force in my life. At the age of 20, I had the serendipitous opportunity to connect with my second cousin, Evelyn (nee Macleod) Smith, who at the time was in her 70s. Evelyn held the esteemed role of record keeper for the Lewis community in the Eastern Townships of Quebec (ETQ). It was through her guidance and generosity that I embarked on my genealogical journey.
Evelyn bestowed upon me my first genealogy software, the now nostalgic Ancestral Quest, stored on old-fashioned floppy disks. With it came her meticulously curated database, containing over 27,000 entries encompassing the lineage of the 500 families who had migrated from the Isle of Lewis to settle in the ETQ. In an era predating the convenience of Google and scanners, this repository was a labour of love, painstakingly assembled through manual transcription of church records, cemetery inscriptions, and family trees sent from across the globe.
What sets this archive apart is its singular focus on the Isle of Lewis lineage. Every entry in this sacred global Lewis family tree is rigorously vetted for connection; if no link exists, it finds no place within these hallowed branches. Of the 500 families represented, approximately 90% boast documented lineages spanning 3 to 4 generations, while the remaining 10% trace back to families who briefly settled in the ETQ before moving on. Continuously evolving, we persistently add to this tapestry of familial history.
Today, the database stands as a testament to our collective heritage, encompassing around 134,000 individuals intricately woven into the fabric of Lewis lineage.

Why buy Cemetery books, when they are free online?
While online cemetery records can provide basic information, they often have limitations. Here’s why Hebrides.ca ETQ Cemetery Books offer a more comprehensive and valuable resource for your genealogical research:
Detailed Information: Online records typically include just the inscriptions on headstones, which can be incomplete or worn away over time. Our cemetery books provide detailed information based on local church records and inscriptions, ensuring more accurate and complete data.
Comprehensive Records: Our books go beyond what is written on the stones. They include additional information about parents, spouses, and the areas in Lewis the individuals came from, offering a richer and more complete family history.
Allotment Numbers: Each entry in our cemetery books is associated with an allotment number. This allows you to cross-reference with our offline genealogical Lewis database at Hebrides.ca, providing a seamless and organized way to track family connections.
Homestead/Croft Numbers: Every family listed in our cemetery books is assigned a homestead or "croft" number, such as 14 Lingwick or 56 Winslow. These numbers correspond to entries in our detailed croft books (Lingwick Crofts and Winslow-Stornoway Crofts), making it easier to trace your ancestors' movements and connections.
Local Expertise: Our records are compiled with a deep understanding of the local history and genealogy of the Isle of Lewis and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This specialized knowledge ensures the accuracy and relevance of the information provided.
Preservation of Inscriptions: Even when headstones are illegible or damaged, our cemetery books preserve the information through church records and other historical documents, ensuring that no data is lost over time.
By using Hebrides.ca ETQ Cemetery Books, you gain access to a wealth of detailed, accurate, and well-organized genealogical information that goes far beyond what is available online. This makes them an invaluable tool for anyone researching their Hebridean roots.
What are Croft (homestead) records?
Family tree croft books are specialized genealogical publications that document the histories and ancestries of families, particularly those from the Isle of Lewis, in a manner similar to homestead records. Here’s what sets them apart:
Detailed Family Histories: Croft books provide comprehensive genealogical records for families, often spanning multiple generations. They include detailed information such as birth, marriage, and death dates, along with personal anecdotes and stories that bring your ancestors to life.
Organized by Crofts: Each family is associated with a specific croft (a small agricultural unit or homestead common in the Scottish Highlands and Islands). The books document the families' histories based on these crofts, making it easier to trace lineage and understand family connections.
Fictional Addresses Based on Historical Context: The croft books often assign fictional addresses based on the traditional Lewis Croft system. This allows for a structured and organized way to document where families originally settled and how they moved over time.
Cross-Referencing Families: Croft books often provide cross-references to other families within the same area, illustrating the interconnectedness of the community. This is particularly useful for understanding the broader social and familial networks.
Combining Historical and Modern Research: These books blend historical records with contemporary genealogical research, providing a thorough and accurate representation of family histories. This includes information from local archives, oral histories, and personal documents.
Tailored for Specific Regions: Unlike general genealogical resources, family tree croft books are tailored for specific regions, in this case, the Isle of Lewis. This specialization ensures a higher level of detail and accuracy for families from this area.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Croft books help preserve the cultural heritage of the Isle of Lewis by documenting the lives and histories of its inhabitants. They serve as a valuable resource for descendants looking to connect with their roots and understand their family's past.
