Book Release "1851 Exiles" by Angus Macleod & Leodhas Macleod
Following the success of the CD "The Silent Ones: A Legacy of the Highland Clearances," numerous requests poured in for a deeper exploration of the history of the Isle of Lewis Settlement in Huron Township. Thrilled to respond to these calls, I am delighted to introduce "1851 Exiles," a limited print edition paperback that vividly chronicles the captivating saga of Ontario's Lewis Settlers.
"1851 Exiles" transports readers back to a pivotal moment in Scottish history, when the inhabitants of Lewis faced eviction from their crofts by landlord James Matheson during Scotland's infamous Highland Clearances. Forced to leave their homeland behind, they embarked on a courageous journey overseas, ultimately finding refuge and community in a block of farms in the heart of Huron Township, Bruce County.
This captivating narrative not only sheds light on the hardships endured by the settlers but also celebrates their resilience and determination to preserve their Gaelic language and culture well into the 20th century. Filled with riveting stories and anecdotes from the settlement, many of which have never been published before, "1851 Exiles" offers readers a comprehensive history of the Isle of Lewis from pre-history to the Matheson Clearances, along with insights into the Lewis Community in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
Featuring 39 stunning original color photographs by Leodhas Macleod, the book takes readers on a visual journey through the Isle of Lewis, Eastern Townships of Quebec, and Huron Township, Ontario. In addition to genealogical information and rare old photos meticulously restored for this project, "1851 Exiles" provides a vivid portrayal of the day-to-day lives of Huron Township's Lewis folk. Drawing from personal correspondence, interviews, and family histories, the book offers a unique perspective on this resilient community.
"1851 Exiles" serves as an invaluable companion to the CD "The Silent Ones: A Legacy of the Highland Clearances," offering readers a deeper understanding of the Lewis Settlers' remarkable journey and enduring legacy.

The Silent Ones
A Legacy of the Highland Clearances (released 2005)
THE SILENT ONES is the fulfillment of a life-long dream for composer Angus Macleod. Over three years in the making, this work has taken Macleod on an odyssey of self discovery to Scotland’s Isle of Lewis, the Eastern Townships of Quebec and finally to the main location of the story, Huron Township, Ontario.
The CD unfolds a true tale of tragedy and triumph, chronicling the migration of 109 families from the isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides to the remote backwoods of 19th century Upper Canada. Victims of a kind of ethnic cleansing known as the Highland Clearances, the Lewis emigrants were evicted from their Hebridean crofts in 1851 by landowner James Matheson. The crofters were then transported overseas, where they settled together on a block of farms in the centre of Huron Township, maintaining their language and culture well into the 20th century. The group has become known as the Lewis Settlers.
The Silent Ones is especially close to Angus Macleod’s heart, as he is a direct descendant of these Gaelic pioneers. The CD was recorded at Macleod’s own multi-track recording facility located on a plot of land first settled by his
greatgrandfather and namesake, Angus Macleod
